Types of Anxiety Disorders?

There are several different types of anxiety disorders. If you feel you may have one of these, please understand you are not alone.

There are many people who successfully cope with anxiety every day. Anxiety is a normal human reaction that we have on a daily basis.

We may get nervous when talking to those of the opposite sex or speaking in front of a group of people at work.  You may even panic and scream when you see a spider or other animal, etc. This doesn't necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder or a phobia.

If you have an anxiety disorder, everything is very pronounced and it is not just a passing anxiety but a constant and exaggerated anxiety

One thing that can help is taking an anxiety disorder quiz.

Keep in mind that sometimes people can have two or three different types of anxiety disorders at the same time.  Let's Analyze some of them. 

Types of Anxiety Disorders:

*Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is mainly characterized by having a general anxious feeling all the time that is difficult to shake. You are just not able to relax or focus well.  It gets in the way of your job and personal life.

*Social Anxiety Disorder

Social Anxiety Disorder is mainly characterized by having an irrational, excessive fear of crowds. You may even experience anxiety with a particular aspect of a social situation such as eating in front of others or using a public bathroom.

*Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is characterized by having an obsession or a "ritual" and doing that same thing over and over again. This can be cleaning, checking locks, bathing, counting numbers, etc.

*Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is caused by just as the name indicates, trauma. It can range from being a major traumatic event such as a war, kidnapping, rape, earthquake, or hurricane to a minor traumatic event such as a move to a completely different area or a change in your family situation.

*Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder is mainly characterized by having panic attacks. These are also referred to as anxiety attacks. These are intense, anxious episodes that instill fear and panic in the person. You can certainly have panic disorder by itself, but many times this is accompanied by another type of anxiety disorder.

*Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is normally characterized by having an extreme fear of open spaces or being out in public. This fear is paralyzing and causes an enormous amount of anxiety for you. Normally, agoraphobia is linked closely with other types of anxiety disorders. For example, if it is more of the social fear, its linked to Social Anxiety Disorder. If it is a result of a traumatic situation that you have developed a phobia, then it's linked to PTSD, and so on.
